Monster Hunter Map by Azophel Monster Hunter Map by Azophel
Finally finished up on a project I've been working on for the past seven months - a revised version of the world map for the Monster Hunter video game series for the new Monster Hunter TBRPG on BZPower. As far as maps go, I'll admit it's a little sloppy, but I'm still very pleased with how it turned out.

Fantasy cartography is a passion of mine; I've been messing around with one map or another for the better part of the last decade. It's a sad truth that I've never finished one before this, though; it's just confirmation of the power of making something for someone else over being accountable just to yourself.

Here is the original, official Monster Hunter Map.

Program: Photoshop CS3
Time: On and off, about 7 Months

I actually created a custom brush and played around with the settings until I got the desired effect. Then I just painted a different background color underneath so that they stood out. =)

Gradients and smudging will give you nice base textures for your continents; the Great Desert being a prime example of the result. =D

I'm missing most of the locations from MH4, but yeah, this is an overall map of the series so far.

Well, I did take a bit of artistic license placing some of the more obscure locations, but I'm relatively certain of that one. The MHP3rd loading screen shows its relationship to the volcano belt, which is roughly that far north.

Very nice! And you even labeled the districts and oceans. So sad I didn't see this when you first posted it months ago. When they release more information and label more towns and parts of the map, will you be updating this with the new labels? If not, maybe I could do it for you. (I love cartography as well but am not as good as you). Into favorites it's going. :D

Thank you! Ideally, I'd like to keep it updated, but I'm not sure there's enough room to squash more labels in where they introduce new regions. =P It's admittedly a bit out of date already; I need to put the rest of the MH4 locales on it...

Sure, you can show it around. What good's a map if no one uses it? =P

Nice to see you've not been idle!

I've nothing to do with Monster Hunter nor its TBRPG, but I can say you've definitely captured the feel of a classic fantasy world map here. The terrain gradients going from snow to grass to sand are very smoothly done, and the placenames are positioned just right; enough to stand out but not to obscure the bits they're labelling.

I like the clouds creeping in from the edges too, although I think the top left corner is a little too full of unused space. Perhaps a compass wouldn't be out of place there...

Thanks; it's good to know that all those years of research and messing around weren't for nothing. =P

True; I forgot to link to the original map I based this off of; I'll edit that in a minute. The original was much more old-fashioned/hand drawn, and it had a wyvern swooping out of the cloud in that corner. I realize now that it was, as you said, filling up the unused space. That compass isn't a bad idea...
